What is a Strategy?

Strategy and strategic document outline the general future steps one intends to take – usually over no more than a 2-3 year period. They are an attempt to manage future uncertainty to the benefit of the organization.

What is an IT Strategy?

There are many definitions of what IT strategy is. We can define IT Strategy as an iterative process to align IT capability with business requirements:

IT Strategy is a process not a point in time event
IT Strategy is iterative – success comes after multiple – do and learn – cycles
IT Strategy has two roles:
- Guiding the business strategy
- IT delivering on the business strategy.
IT Strategy sets direction for IT function in an organization (ensures that invested money in IT creates the maximum value)

IT Strategy helps create shareholder value. In other words, it helps to maximize the return on IT investment.

Why develop an IT Strategy?

An IT strategy provides the IT team and the organization with a sense of direction. While this is an excellent reason for developing strategy, the most important is alignment with the business aims and objectives. In other words, organization management will gain a confidence that IT system and services provided are developed, deployed and managed in proper manner and remain in line with business. Additionally, a published and well communicated strategy helps to manage business users’ expectations.

A weak IT strategy can be costly and wasteful, especially for resource-constrained organizations that operate with minimal budget, tools, knowledge and people. It also implies that organizations cannot respond to change of business requirements rapidly enough. The absence of strategic anticipation causes organizations to be inefficiently reactive, forcing them to work in a constant state of catch-up.
